How To Figure Out if Someone Was Arrested or Is in a Canyon County Jail (Idaho)

The Idaho Public Records Law makes many government documents, audio files, and written reports publicly accessible–unless sealed by law–to ensure transparency.1

Since this law includes public access to arrest records, there are several publicly available options to find out if someone is in jail (depending on where the person is being held and the arresting agency).

When determining if someone was arrested, searchers knowing the arrestee’s full name and approximately the date and location of the arrest can help streamline the search.

Look Up Arrest Records via the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office

In Canyon County, arrest records can be requested either online by completing and submitting a record request form to the Canyon County Sheriff’s Records Section or in person by visiting the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office at the address listed below:

Canyon County Sheriff’s Office
1115 Albany St., Room 137
Caldwell, ID 83605

Phone: (208)-454 -7510
Fax: (208)-454 -7476
Email: [email protected]
Hours: M-F 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Daily arrest records that are requested via the electronic form can usually be emailed, mailed, faxed, or picked up in person but some records are only available in certain formats. The Records Section only accepts cash unless the requester pays in advance–in which case a personal check, cashier check, or money order will also be accepted.

Detailed record expenses charged by the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office can be found by clicking “Civil Process Fees” on the “Civil & Records” page.

Requesters can expect a response or their desired Canyon County public records within 3 business days.

The sheriff’s office also offers the following online arrest logs for members of the public to review Canyon County bookings:

  • The Canyon County jail roster lists all inmates currently incarcerated within the Canyon County Jail or Canyon County Work Release Center (including juveniles with adult charges, inmates held on civil contempt, and individuals participating in programs such as work release, pretrial release, or community supervision).
    • This tool is searchable by typing the subject’s name or clicking on the first letter of their last name.
  • Canyon County Jail current arrests exhibit a free arrest history on all inmates currently or formerly held in the jail who were charged with criminal offenses (excluding juveniles and those on sheriff’s inmate labor detail)

Both resources listed above can serve to help find someone’s mugshot or confirm whether or not a particular individual is in the county jail. These arrest reports will list the subject’s name, I.D. number, arrest date, and charges.

Track Down Arrest Reports Through Municipal Police Departments in Canyon County Idaho

While most arrest inquiries should be made with the County Sheriff’s office, arrest details, also known as police reports, can be obtained from the police department who made the arrest; this can be helpful in legal matters, insurance claims, journalism, complaints or pure curiosity.

For example, after filling out a Nampa Record Request Form and submitting it to the Records Division of the Nampa Police Department, the requester will be provided with the desired arrest record if it occurred in the city of Nampa. Those requesting these records will benefit from knowing the report number, involved parties, and the date and location of the incident.

Requests can be submitted to the Nampa PD online, by mail, by fax, or in person, but the requester might be charged a nominal fee (depending on the type of record and the number of copies needed).

If instructions for requesting public records cannot be found online, it’s advised to call the relevant police department and inquire about their policy.

Individuals looking for records of arrests that were made in surrounding counties can learn how to obtain them through the Idaho public information search tutorial; this resource also offers streamlined instruction for retrieving other state public records (i.e. background checks, warrants, vital records, and more).

How To See if Someone Is Married or Divorced in Canyon County Idaho

In Canyon County, marriage records and divorce certificates are accessible through many avenues at both the local and state levels.

However, Idaho law makes these documents confidential for 50 years after the event.

Requests for certified copies of marriage certificates should be mailed to the address above along with the following information:

  • Date of Ceremony

  • Requester Contact Information
  • Appropriate Fee Payment (payable to “Canyon County Recorder & Passport Office”)
  • Self-addressed and stamped envelope for record return (unless picking record up in person when ready)

1115 Albany Street, Rm 334
Caldwell, Idaho 83605

Phone: 208.454.7455
Hours: Weekdays 9 am-12:30 pm & 1-3 pm

More comprehensive divorce decrees can be obtained by submitting a court record request to the clerk. Individuals should fill out the entire form including case numbers, names of those involved in the case, and a statement that a divorce decree (or other divorce case record) is being requested. Fees for copies, credit card processing fees and certification expenses can be found by clicking the “Costs & Fees” tab.

The last option for finding county marriage records and certificates is through the document lookup, which can be browsed by recording date, document number, document type and name.

Utilize Idaho State Resources To Obtain Vital Records: Marriage & Divorce

Canyon County divorce records or marriage certificates ranging from May 1947 to the present day can also be obtained via the Idaho Bureau of Vital Records (IVR) of the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare for $16 each.5

However, records regarding marriages or divorces that were finalized within the past 50 years will only be granted to the subject(s) listed on the certificate, immediate family, or legal representatives.

Since there is no public IVR office, in person requests are not an option and requests must instead be submitted by postal mail.

Idaho marriage and divorce records can be obtained from the IVR by following these steps:

Idaho Bureau of Vital Records & Health Statistics
P.O. Box 83720
Boise, Idaho 83720-0036

Completed requests will be delivered via USPS. Questions for the bureau can be directed to [email protected] or 208.334.5980.

Note: Divorce certificates will indicate if a divorce was granted but are not as detailed as divorce decrees; divorce decrees need to be requested through the Canyon County Clerk (contact information listed above)4

The state of Idaho also endorses the independent vital records service called VitalChek for purchasing marriage and divorce records online. This is the most efficient option, and fulfilled requests will be delivered by USPS or–if expedited shipping is requested and paid for–by UPS.

VitalChek rates (payable by credit card):

  • $10.50 Non-refundable Fee Per Order
  • $10 Per Expedited (Rush) Order Processing
  • $19 Per Expedited Delivery via UPS

Third-party platforms will also help members of the public check if someone is married for a small fee, and can do so on a national rather than county- or statewide scale. These services are also able to check aliases and perform online searches that can provide insight even if the record is not yet publicly available.

One last option for finding marriage records–especially on those that occurred before the IVR started maintaining records–is through local churches near where the marriage ceremony was held. Churches often documented marriages and may still have these records, either for one’s own record-keeping or to assist with tracing genealogy.

Find Criminal Records via State Agencies

Idaho also makes it possible to look up someone’s criminal record through state resources in Idaho, with the most reliable method being through the state’s central repository.

Both name-based background checks and fingerprint-based background checks are provided via the Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) of the Idaho State Police (ISP) for a $20 fee.9,10,11

While the name-based record check will return criminal history information, individuals may benefit from knowing that these are less accurate than fingerprint-based checks due to the potential for discrepancies because of misspellings, aliases, or duplicate names.

Everyone has the right to request various free public records in Idaho in accordance with the Idaho Public Records Law, but without obtaining the subject’s fingerprints, the name-based check is the most common method.12,1 Therefore, although either type of criminal record is accessible, the fingerprint-based check is usually done on oneself.

Requesters must have their fingerprints taken on an official fingerprinting card by any authorized law enforcement agency and send the card in with the relevant form and $20 payment (by credit card or check).

Fingerprinting services are also available at BCI Headquarters:

Bureau of Criminal Identification
Idaho State Police
700 Stratford Drive, Ste. 120
Meridian, Idaho 83642

Phone: 208.884.7130
Hours: Mon – Fri 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The Bureau of Criminal Identification charges a fee of $10 for the first fingerprint card and $5 for each additional card. These charges are in addition to the $20 background check fee. Police departments that offer fingerprinting services will charge a separate fee as well.

The Idaho Department of Corrections’ Resident/Client Search is a useful search tool where current inmates and those released under the supervision of the IDOC can be viewed with details about their charges, sentences, and case information at no cost to the user. The portal can be searched by either last name or IDOC number, but results are restricted to the state of Idaho.

Two sex offender registries–at the state and national levels–are free to use and publicly accessible to individuals who want to check for the criminal history of sex offenders in their area or check information on a specific person statewide.

To search Canyon County, individuals should use the county search feature of the Idaho Sex Offender Registry.15,16 After selecting “Canyon” from the county dropdown menu and specifying whether they’d like to search adult or juvenile offenders, searchers can click “search” to be brought to a compiled database of county-wide offenders.

Searches can also be conducted based on city, offender name, zip code, or map view.

Offender profiles found via the Idaho State Sex Offender Registry will include:

  • Address(es)
  • Date of Birth
  • Eye Color
  • Full Name & Alias(es)

  • Height
  • Mugshot

Background checks can be done for either personal or professional reasons. The bullet points below provide a brief overview of each.

Personal Background Checks:

  • Provide insight on individuals such as a friend, family member, potential date, colleague, neighbor, coworker, etc.
  • Do not require the subject’s knowledge or permission
  • Do not necessitate a stated purpose or reason for the check
  • Requesters are prohibited from using the information within to harass, stalk, commit hate crimes, etc.
  • This can be performed by reviewing arrest and criminal records, court cases, online reports, police records, and viewing other publicly available information
  • Third-party services will return information gathered from many agencies, counties, states, and record custodians efficiently

Professional Background Checks:

Neither Canyon County nor its major cities provide professional background checks, but both Level 1 name-based background checks and Level 2 fingerprint-based background checks are accessible via the BCI.9,10 (The methods of performing each type of check, along with the fees, payment methods, and address of the BCI, can be found in the section above on criminal records)

Although going through the BCI is most advisable and will be the best option for members of the public, readers may also benefit from knowing that the Idaho Background Check Unit (BCU) of the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare conducts more in depth background checks on applicants, as those who apply to work for the Department are required to undergo this type of check rather than the typical BCI checks.

Applicants must have their fingerprints taken at any of the authorized fingerprinting locations, get their background check notarized, provide a valid form of I.D., and pay the appropriate fees by check, money order, cash, or credit/debit card.

Though there are locations throughout the state, the closest office (located in Canyon County) is listed below:

How To Request Birth & Death Certificates in Canyon County

Vital records such as birth and death certificates are available to the public, but they are made confidential by Idaho law until after 50 years for death certificates and 100 years for birth certificates.

However, even after this time period has passed, only individuals fitting certain criteria may obtain them. For example, the person named on the document and their immediate family members are able to request these records, but members of the public must be able to prove that they have a legitimate reason to file the request.

The county clerk does not disburse birth or death certificates, but death certificates can be viewed through the county’s document lookup feature, which is searchable by document number, type, and recording dates.

The Idaho Bureau of Vital Records (IVR) of the Department of Health & Welfare hosts vital records for births and deaths that took place after July 1911 and accepts written requests for these certificates.24

Follow these steps to submit a written record request:

  1. Download and complete the appropriate request form
  2. Make a photocopy of an accepted form of identification
  3. Pay certificate fees by either check or money order made out to “Idaho Vital Records” (certified copies cost $16 each, but additional fees may apply, such as for expedited processing)
  4. Mail all items listed above to the following address:
    • Idaho Bureau of Vital Records & Health Statistics
      P.O. Box 83720
      Boise, Idaho 83720 – 0036

Processing tends to take 1-2 weeks for expedited requests or 2-4 weeks for standard processing.

The state of Idaho has partnered with VitalChek to accept online vital record requests; orders placed through VitalChek will be shipped via USPS unless expedited delivery is paid for, in which case the records will be delivered to the requester by UPS.

VitalChek payments must be made by credit card – the fees are found below:

  • $10.50 Non-refundable Fee Per Order
  • $10 Per Expedited (Rush) Order Processing
  • $19 Per Expedited Delivery via UPS

Birth, death, and other vital records may also be purchased via third-party platforms but these will be neither certified nor official.
